Social work

Social worker works at indivdual level, group level, community level and organisational level. The roles of the social worker are outlined by the organisation they work in.  There are different fields in social work 1) school social workers work with students, teachers and parents. They can work in the area of drug abuse, disability, etc. They can organise community outreach programs. Medical social workers work with patients and their families. They provide counselling and practical assistance. Psychiatric social workers work with disturbed children, adolescents. They conduct family therapy. They support psyhciatrists. Community social workers work in urban and rural areas with organisations. They wokr on community related issues such as unemployment, etc. They provide solutions to the community problems. Child care and family services social workers work in day care centres and child care homes and work on issues from childhoodo adulthood. Gerontological social workers deal with care of ild people and handle cases of AIDS. Criminology and correctional social workers work in prisons , remand homes , delinquent prevention centre, etc. Labour welfare socila workers work on labour welfare issues. Social workers can also carry out research (Tondon, n.d.)

Courses in Social Work in India

1) B.S.W / B.A (Social Work) duration is 

3years and candidates who have passed the XIIth standard can apply for this course.

2) M.S.W / M.A (Social Work) duration is 

2 years and candidates who have completed graduation in any subject can apply but graduates having sociology or social sciences as their subjects are preferred. 

3)M.Phil course can be undertaken by candidates who have completed M.S.W can apply for this course

4)Ph.D can be undertaken by candidates with a M.S.W or M.Phil degree can pursue a doctorate in social work.
