About The Occupation

Food Technology is the study of sciences related to food processing which involves, preservation of fruits, sea food, meats, cooked foods, vegetables, juices and beverages and also the manufacture of confectionary, snacks, foodstuffs and the packaging of these for marketing. Most food technologists specialize in one of these and many are involved in research. The job of a food technologists entails:

1) In charge for guiding the processing, conservation and preservation of food stuffs 2)Creating new food stuffs , 3)improving flavors  keeping the nutritive value intact Improving existing techniques for economizing processing, adding value, creating new tastes for providing impetus to marketing and consumption of processed foodstuffs 4)Evolving measures such as infestation control, fungicidal treatment and insecticidal storage to protect foods from spoilage and damage 5) Examining foodstuffs for contamination, adulteration, food value, etc. by biochemical and nutrition tests and quality control measures 6) Developing new methods and processes for recovering useful and utilizable by products from industrial and domestic wastes of foodstuffs 7) Use of processes such as blending, anti-oxidization etc. 8)Research for new and improved food processing techniques 9) Guide the packaging of different foodstuffs for making it more safe and attractive

Eligibility

Food Processing Industry is a growing industry with good job prospects. Some universities in India offer degree courses in food technology and food science. There are also institutes offering postgraduate courses in specialized aspects of food processing.

Admission for under graduate courses in food technology, food science and home science is open for candidates with PCM or PCB at 10+2 level.

For admission in M.Sc / Management eligibility criterion is B.Sc. Food technologists have graduate / postgraduate degrees in the field, which are offered at various institutes in India. Since the work varies, the professionals are taken from different disciplines. Dietetics / Nutrition and Hotel Management graduates (food & beverage) can work as a team in food production industries, marketing, preservation and so on. This is why graduates in Home Science or Nutrition have a wide range of options before them.
