FLASHFLOOD IN HIMALAYAS
Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh in Indian Himalayas hit by devastating flash floods
The Himalayan states of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh were hit by torrential rain, landslides and flash floods on 14-17th June 2013. The erratic weather conditions have been attributed to early monsoons in Northern India. River Ganges and its major tributaries of Alaknanda and Bhagirathi have swelled up, causing widespread destruction in Uttarakhand. Kinnaur district in Himachal Pradesh, received the highest rainfall in 20 years. Public infrastructures such as vital bridges on national highways, houses, religious structures and vehicles have been badly damaged. While rescue operations are drawing to an end, 4700 are still missing and long term rehabilitation still remains an area of concern. With over 760 villages still inaccessible and more than half of them suffering from lack of clean drinking water and other basic necessities, rebuilding life and livelihood of people remains a challenge. Fresh cloud burst in Urgam valley on 8th July 2013 has caused more damages in Chamoli district.
Our efforts: The Pragya ground staff in Chamoli, Uttarkashi (Uttarakhand) and Kinnaur (Himachal Pradesh) are working to provide humanitarian support, and our team in Gurgaon is gathering and sending across necessary relief material. We are supplying food to relief camp and medicines to health department. Blankets, tarpaulins, water purification tablets, medicines, hygiene kits are reaching remote villages. Pragya staff are also helping in coordination at the District Administration facilitated Control Room at Joshimath. How you can help ?
