COVID-19 PANDEMIC

The COVID-19 pandemic has swept the world into a maelstrom since early 2020, with staggering numbers of people infected and an ever-rising death toll and very large numbers of people critically ill, severely overwhelming the healthcare systems, in every country affected. The communities we serve, the poor, disadvantaged and underserved in the developing countries that we work in, are already vulnerable. The COVID shock, being of a multi-dimensional nature affecting health, social and psychological, as well as economic aspects, would be debilitating for them. Of the countries in which Pragya carries out development programming (Bangladesh, India, Kenya, Nepal), India is significantly affected and on the edge of an exponential spike in cases, as it has moved to a limited community spread along the epidemiological curve. Among the multitude of issues related to the COVID-19 pandemic, Pragya has selected to focus on and strive to address the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the urban and rural poor and capacity of healthcare workers to address COVID-19 pandemic. Our Response would comprise:

(i) Prevention of the spread of COVID-19 among the urban and rural poor; 

(ii) Humanitarian relief and supporting the economic resilience of the rural and urban poor, through the pandemic and after it.

• Pragya team provided support to Office of Civil Surgeon - Gurgaon, NCR • Pragya team provided food and essential supplies to food bank for quarantine centres in Chamba, Himachal Pradesh and also provided masks and gloves to the police personnel serving in the frontline • We are collaborating with District Administration - Rudraprayag and Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand, to provide food and hygiene kits to those in need. • Pragya team handed over triple layer masks to District Disaster Management Officer in Araria, Bihar • Pragya team provided cotton masks and sanitisers to frontline Anganwadi workers in Udaipur and Dungarpur, Rajasthan who are going door to door for screening, provided food and hygiene kits to block level food banks that are providing these kits to the people in need of support. • Pragya team is working with district administrations in Araria and Madhepura districts, Bihar to provide food and hygiene kits, masks and sanitisers to community members and migrant workers in quaratine centres and has provided the District Administration and Govt Hospitals with cloth masks, N-95 masks, sanitizers and temperature scanners for use by the frontline workers
