Pragya Kenya is a non-profit development organisation committed to poverty relief, social justice, environmental protection and conservation, gender equality, access to education and disaster management. Founded in 2011, Pragya secures transformational change at the grassroots, focusing on the remote and marginalised communities often left behind in the development process.
Pragya’s mission is to enable grassroots sustainable development for the poorest, most neglected communities in remote communities and marginal societies, in a way that preserves and promotes local cultures and fragile ecosystems.
Pragya’s vision is one of marginalised communities living dignified lives free from poverty and injustice, fully enjoying the benefits of development in a manner harmonious with cultural heritage and the natural environment.
The core values upon which Pragya is founded guide us in our fulfilling our mission.
Development without destruction

Established in 2011, Pragya Kenya was the first branch of the Global Pragya family to take up Pragya’s mission on the African continent. Pragya’s earliest focus was promoting the economic empowerment of poor smallholding farming communities in western Kenya, along with conservation work in what is left of the region’s only rainforest. Since then, Pragya’s work has expanded to the arid and semi-arid counties of Turkana, Samburu and Laikipia, designing interventions, conducting research and delivering projects in diverse themes surrounding education for pastoralist communities, water management and sanitation, maternal and reproductive healthcare, and inter-community conflict reduction. Since its inception, Pragya Kenya has been guided by its core values in delivering its work, and continues to conduct itself today with unwavering commitment to these principles.
