Pragya’s mission is to enable grassroots sustainable development for the poorest, most neglected communities in remote and marginal societies, in a way that preserves and promotes local cultures and fragile ecosystems.
Pragya’s vision is one of marginalised communities living dignified lives free from poverty and injustice, fully enjoying the benefits of development in a manner harmonious with cultural heritage and the natural environment.
The core values upon which Pragya is founded guide us in our fulfilling our mission.
Development without destruction
Pragya brings the benefits of modernity to the underserved in the most remote regions and fringe societies of the world, in a way that embraces the best of their cultural heritage and sustains their ecological base. Pragya's work in Nepal began in 2006. Early work was aimed at research into conservation of the Himalayan ecosystem, and an extension of the ongoing programme on the same theme in neighbouring India. Recognising the critical development needs in Nepal, following a decade of civil war in the country, Pragya quickly enhanced its portfolio and initiated grassroots developmental projects in multiple sectors, building as well a number of important partnerships with local civil society and government. Research on development issues was followed by capacity building of development actors in the country, with a thrust on the most remote mountain districts in western Nepal, and direct programming in the areas of education, water and sanitation, livelihoods and women’s empowerment. The earthquake that devastated the country in 2015 was a watershed point in Pragya’s programming trajectory in Nepal, when we had to move our attention to other districts that were most affected by the disaster, and to relief and rehabilitation of the communities in these districts. Extensive work was taken up on delivering relief supplies, emergency healthcare and water & sanitation, on rebuilding the lives and livelihoods of these communities, including community infrastructure such as schools, water facilities, and on addressing violence against women and girls.
